What Is EPS? Understanding Emergency Power Supply for Home Battery Systems
Power outages across the UK grid are increasingly driven by severe weather and aging infrastructure. As more households transition to renewable energy, one of the most common assumptions is that having solar panels or a home battery automatically keeps the lights on during a blackout.
In reality, standard grid-tied solar and battery inverters are engineered to shut down instantly during a grid power failure. This automatic shutdown (known as anti-islanding protection) is a safety requirement designed to prevent your system from feeding high-voltage electricity back into power lines while utility engineers carry out repairs.
To draw power from your solar panels or battery during a blackout, your system requires an Emergency Power Supply (EPS) configuration.

The 0% VAT Clock Is Ticking
In April 2022 (and expanded in February 2024 to include standalone battery storage), HMRC introduced a temporary zero-rate VAT incentive on energy-saving materials. This allowed UK homeowners to install solar PV systems, battery storage, and heat pumps completely free of VAT.
However, under current UK legislation, this incentive is set to expire on 31st March 2027. On 1st April 2027, the tax rate will revert to 5%.
